Sous la direction de Bertille Lyonnet, une équipe a prospecté environ 60 sites archéologiques dans la partie syrienne de la Mésopotamie septentrionale. La zone, de 5000 km2, s'étendait au nord, de Hasséké jusqu'à la frontière turque et des rives du Khabur, à l'ouest, jusqu'à l'ancienne route Qamishly-Kasséké, à l'est.
Entre 1991 et 1997, différents spécialistes et étudiants ont étudié le matériel conservé dans un dépôt à Qamishly. Les premiers résultats sont présentés dans l'ouvrage :
